DURBAN - A man was killed in a stabbing incident outside a drinking establishment in the Howick CBD on Saturday night.

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson stated that when paramedics arrived at the scene, it was established that an individual had been stabbed near a local drinking establishment located at the corner of Bell and Main Streets.

“Unfortunately, one person sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics,” he said.

Robertson further explained that the situation could have escalated had it not been for the instincts and quick action of K9 Hunter.

“The situation was complicated by a large crowd of intoxicated individuals who were causing disruptions and chaos,” he said noting that the situation had become hostile.

He said that while patrolling, the Midlands EMS K9 Unit encountered the disturbance, and K9 Hunter was immediately deployed.

Due to the quick thinking of the handler and K9 Hunter's instincts, the situation was swiftly brought under control, he said.

“This allowed paramedics to safely access the scene and the situation without further delays,” said Robertson.

Unfortunately, there was nothing more paramedics could do, and the stab victim succumbed to his injuries.

Midlands EMS expressed pride in K9 Hunter and his unwavering dedication to his work.

Robertson said while the death was tragic, the situation could have become worse.

“Without K9 Hunter’s quick reactions and bravery, the situation could have escalated further, as there were intoxicated individuals and ongoing altercations in the vicinity.”

“Hunter’s actions helped prevent the situation from worsening, highlighting the invaluable role our K9 team plays in ensuring safety and support during emergencies,” said Robertson.
