A wreath-laying ceremony is set to take place on Thursday on the N2 highway near Mandeni, where eight people died in a crash on Friday.
On Wednesday, another fatal crash occurred on the same stretch of road. The crash involving a car and a truck left one dead and another injured.
On Friday, eight males, including three high school pupils between the ages of 17 and 27, died at the scene after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck, leaving the driver of the truck in a critical condition.
Speaking on Wednesday’s crash, IPSS Medical Rescue said the driver of the light motor vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene.
“The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene by emergency medical response services (EMRS).”
KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said both accidents occurred on the N2 between Bridges 17 and 19 in Mandeni.
“A wreath-laying ceremony will take place tomorrow at 09h00 [Thursday] on the same spot. It will be attended by MEC Siboniso Duma, families, mayor of Ilembe District Municipality Thobani Shandu, mayor of Mandeni Local Municipality Thabani Mdlalose, and senior religious leaders,” said the department.
The MEC visited the families of the deceased from Friday’s crash as well as the injured truck driver last week.
Duma said a dedicated team from the department will be with the families this week to offer support during the release of the victims’ bodies for their funerals and burial
