London - One in three workers are turning to comfort food – such as chocolate or biscuits – to deal with stress, a survey has revealed.
The figure rises to four in ten of those aged 35 to 44 as they battle to meet deadlines and balance long hours with family life.
The pressure to achieve and bring in a good salary means career takes precedence over family for four in ten fathers and one in four mothers, according to a study.
Eating is generally seen as a more effective way to cope with problems than exercise or talking things through with friends, family or colleagues. The figures come from retail analysts Mintel, who found 70 percent had stress issues.
A spokesperson said: “Eating comfort food is the number one thing working Britons have done to tackle work stress in the past 12 months with 33 percent saying they’ve done this, followed by 30 percent who have turned to alcohol and one in seven – 15 percent – who have smoked or vaped.”
About 29 percent have exercised to relieve stress, while 30 percent have spoken to family or colleagues.
