London - Eating a diet rich in wholegrains and low in red or processed meat may delay mental decline.
A recent UK study showed — for the first time — that what we eat affects levels of chemicals involved with inflammation, which is linked to a raised risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Researchers from University College London analysed the diets and blood tests of more than 5 000 people over ten years.
The results, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, showed that people whose diets were high in red or processed meat and fried food — and low in wholegrains — had higher levels of an inflammatory protein.
They also did worse in cognitive tests.
