London - Staying sharp as you grow older could be as simple as strumming on a guitar for the first time or chatting in German.

A website dedicated to helping people stay well in old age, MyAgeingParent.com, has released the top ten tips for keeping the brain active for those in their 60s, 70s and beyond.

The No.1 tip is to challenge ourselves by learning a new skill, language or musical instrument as this stimulates brain cells. We are also advised to try a new exercise routine – be it energetic zumba or gentle yoga – and take a friend along to make it more fun.

And using our weaker hand to write, draw or even stir our tea is an easy way of making the brain work harder during everyday tasks.

The site’s experts also advise changing up our routine to avoid growing bored – take a different route to the shops or avoid having the same meal on the same night each week. Taking time out to unwind also allows the brain to properly process information it has observed.

And in a move which may not always go down well with the neighbours, the site suggests turning music up loud so that you really listen to it, rather than just having it on in the background. This is said to increase levels of wellbeing.

The site took its advice from medical and science reports as well as methods which elderly people have found useful in preventing mental decline.

The site’s founder, Deborah Stone, said: “The brain, just like the body, needs exercise as well as periods of rest. And just as you wouldn’t do just one exercise to keep you physically trim and fit, the same is true with keeping mentally alert and on top of your game. Variety is key. But always remember: use it or lose it!”
