The 17th edition of the FNB Art Joburg kicks off this Friday at Sandton Convention Centre.

A cornerstone in Africa’s contemporary art and culture calendar, FNB Art Joburg plays an integral role in nurturing and sustaining a commercial cultural ecosystem that centres practitioners based on the continent and in the diaspora.

This year’s offering features 41 exhibitors from 14 countries, representing more than 100 artists. Curated into seven specialised sections - gallery HUB, MAX, GIF, gallery LAB, AUX, ETC, and ORG.

This year’s fair includes leading gallery representation, an incubation for tomorrow’s leaders in art, larger than life installations, engagement with print and publishing houses, thought-provoking talks, as well as the active presence of Johannesburg’s seminal art institutions.

Nigerian-based gallery, 16x16, will be showcasing an exhibition titled “Synthetic Dreams; A photography series by Bubu Ogisi and Tamibe Bourdane”.

Bubu Ogisi is a fibre artist and the creative director of the wearable art brand I.AM.ISIGO.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and now living between Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, and Nairobi, she studied Fashion at the prestigious Ecole Superieure des Art et technique de la Mode (ESMOD) Paris, France.

Ogisi's work aims to decolonise and free the mind by creating tapestry pieces that manipulate gravity, light, colour, mass, and transparency to demonstrate the infinite transformations and iterations of materiality.

The idea of rawness, anti-”finishing” (and therefore anti-Eurocentrism), and functionality exist as strong conceptual design threads throughout her work.

Art lovers can enjoy contemporary African art and culture from September 6 - 8 at FNB Art Joburg.
