Get ready to be glued to your screens as “Shaka iLembe” will be returning with a bang for season 2 in June.

The first season of the highly acclaimed drama series was a massive success, captivating audiences with its gripping storyline and talented star-studded cast.

It also racked up several accolades, including a whopping 12 prizes at the 2024 South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

Season 1 was a game-changer in the entertainment industry, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and raising the bar for local productions.

However, behind the scenes, the production team faced some drama of their own. In May, The SA Guild of Actors (SAGA) looked into a case of gross exploitation after complaints from numerous extras on the set of the second season.

In April, over 100 people from KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga traveled to Joburg at their own expense to work on the second season of the popular production, according to SAGA chairman Jack Devnarain.

Despite these challenges, the team persevered and delivered a top-notch product that resonated with viewers.

But what can fans expect from season 2? According to the production team, the new season is going to expand the "Shaka iLembe" universe in exciting ways.

“Season 2 is a journey into the very soul of Shaka’s world,” said Nomsa Philiso, the CEO of general entertainment at MultiChoice.

“We get to explore Shaka the King, the strategist, the visionary as he builds an empire,” she added.

There will be new characters who will be introduced.

“The new cast members are an explosion of talent. They bring fresh energy, exploring the complexities of power, love, and loyalty in the turbulent era,” said Desiree Markgraaff, partner and "Shaka iLembe's" executive producer.

“There are many new stories we explore taking us to the majestic mountains of the Swati kingdom through to the rolling hills of the Xhosa. South Africa is rich with characters and we’re just beginning to uncover them,” she concluded.

Fans can expect more drama, more action and more suspense as the characters navigate their way through the challenges and obstacles that lie ahead.

Some of the stars who will be returning to the show include Wiseman Mncube as the ruthless Zwide and Dawn Thandeka King as the formidable Mkabayi as well as the show's narrator.

Also returning is Khabonina Qubeka as the power-driven Ntombazi, and Mondli Makhoba as the steadfast Ngomane.

With their combined talent and experience, viewers can expect a thrilling ride full of twists and turns. Season 2 promises to be unforgettable, with a captivating and thrilling storyline, a talented cast, and renewed intensity.
