Rising South African-Ghanaian Afro R&B artist Chayuta’s (real name Layla Mpho Mokoena) new song, “Yawa”, reflects the hardships of modern dating.

Released earlier this month, the soulful track is a blend of Afrobeats and amapiano influences.

The 20-year-old singer explained that “Yawa” is a term that she and her friends would playfully say in primary school.

"When I was recording this track, I reflected on a relatable experience: a failed talking stage with a guy.”

She said that she wanted to turn it into something fun, light-hearted and catchy in order for music lovers to “connect and dance their way through similar situations".

Chayuta's multicultural upbringing has been a driving force in her music.

Born to a Ghanian mother and South Africa, who is former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena, she also spent time in Belgium, Holland, England and South Africa before settling in Ghana.

This rich cultural exposure has helped her develop a sound that transcends borders as she blends Afro R&B Afrobeats and amapiano.

Chayuta said that her dual heritage and cultural connection are a privilege that has deeply shaped her artistry.

She added that her heritage has given her the unique opportunity to explore and connect with diverse musical styles from both cultures.

Meanwhile, Chayuta hopes to collaborate with South African heavyweights like Nasty C, DJ Maphorisa and Tyler ICU.

She believes that their versatility and ability to blend different sounds are inspiring.

On a global scale, Chayuta names Rihanna as a major influence.

"I grew up listening to her and seeing her evolve from when she started at my age to now is something I look up to."

Chayuta’s career milestones include her critically acclaimed 2022 “EP 17”, which showcased her growth as a singer-songwriter.

She has also worked with industry icons like Mix Master Garzy, KelvynBoy and the Grammy-winning D’Wayne Wiggins.
