Netflix has enlisted the services of some of the world’s most experienced boy band and girl group alumni for their new musical reality show.
Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls, One Direction’s Liam Payne and Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child will bring their unparalleled expertise as mentors and judges on “Backing the Band.”
Meanwhile, AJ McLean of The Backstreet Boys will host the series.
According to the streaming giant, the show seeks to form the next great music group without any of the members ever seeing each other.
“A group of talented singers will enter the competition for the opportunity of a lifetime: to find their perfect bandmates solely based on musical compatibility, connection, and, most importantly, merit,” they explained.
They added that viewers can expect plenty of drama, next-level artistry and unforgettable performances.
“The contestants will be in complete control every step of the way, but is chemistry enough to make them a success? And when the bands finally do meet, how will looks, choreography and style come into play?”
Filming started during the US’s summer but an official release date has not been announced yet.
Scherzinger previously served on judging panels for the American versions of “The X Factor”, “Masked Singer” as well as “The Sing-Off”.
“With its team of experienced boy/girl band experts on lock, ‘Building the Band’ will bring together a number of talented singers and task them with forming their own bands without ever seeing each other.”
“Isolated in individual booths, all they’ll have to go on when selecting their bandmates is musical compatibility, connection and chemistry.”
Netflix added that “the stage is set for an unforgettable experience” as when the bands finally meet, physical appearance, choreography and style will then come into play as the show attempts to find the next great music band.
Meanwhile, they said that additional announcements regarding guest judges and the show’s various challenges will be confirmed soon.
It will be produced by Remarkable Entertainment and Banijay UK, with Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison, Clara Elliot and Simon Crossley on board as executive producers.
“‘Building the Band’ is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first,” Lawson said in a statement.
“With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage.”
