The queen of “popiano” has done it again, taking home two Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) for Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song for “Water”, a stunning achievement out of the eight nominations she received.
The nominees for this year’s BBMAs were announced in November, and Tyla was in a league of her own with eight nominations, three of which were in the Top Afrobeats category.
IOL predicted which awards the 22-year-old star might win, and all we can say is, who needs a crystal ball when you have Tyla’s talent and our prediction skills?
She was nominated for:
- Top R&B Artist
- Top R&B Song for “Water”
- Top R&B Album for her self-titled debut album Tyla
- Top R&B Female Artist
- Top Afrobeats Artist
- Top Afrobeats Song for “Water”
Out of these nominations, we predicted she’d walk away with at least three awards:
- Top R&B Song for “Water” – She didn’t win this one but managed to bag the other two awards we predicted.
- Top Afrobeats Artist – She took home this award, beating Nigeria’s top artists Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems.
- Top Afrobeats Song for “Water” – We were confident about this win and, unsurprisingly, she delivered. “Water” had earned over 2 billion streams worldwide by early November, cementing its dominance on the Billboard charts.
Not only did she claim two awards, but she also brought the house down with a lit performance of her hit songs.
Tyla opened her set with “Push 2 Start” and closed it with the fiery banger “Shake Ah,” leaving everyone in awe.

After her performance, Tyla was presented with her accolades. During her acceptance speech, she graciously thanked her dancers for their energy, her record label Epic Records, the BBMAs for the recognition, her loyal fans, the “Tygers” as well as God and her family.
