Now, international rapper Travis Scott is set to bring the house down when he performs at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on October, 11, as part of his extended "Circus Maximus" World Tour.

South Africa has firmly established itself as a premier destination for international music sensations, with recent performances by global stars like Chris Brown and Tems highlighting the nation's vibrant and diverse music scene.

In December 2024, the "Sensational" singer had FNB Stadium packed to the rafters, proving that Mzansi has mad love for R&B.

Brown delivered a sold-out performance at Johannesburg's iconic FNB Stadium.

Fans praised the event for its seamless organisation, noting efficient entry processes and helpful staff.

The concert was lauded as one of the best South Africa had hosted in recent times, with high standards in event planning and a atmosphere that many fans will never forget.

Recently, Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Tems captivated Johannesburg audiences with the launch of her "Born In The Wild" concert tour.

Despite battling a cough, Tems delivered a performance that exceeded fans expectations.

Her soulful voice and emotive delivery left attendees fulfilled, showcasing her dedication and artistry.

The concert attracted over 10k fans, underscoring her growing international appeal.

However, Scott's upcoming performance also brings to mind the tragic events of the Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas, in November 2021.

A crowd surge during his performance led to the deaths of ten individuals due to compressive asphyxiation.

During Scott’s headline performance, thousands of fans rushed towards the stage, creating intense pressure that left people unable to move, breathe or escape.

Many collapsed, while others were trampled or suffocated in the dense crowd.

Emergency responders declared the situation a mass casualty event at 9.38pm, but the concert continued for over 30 minutes after that.

Videos on TikTok and YouTube showed distressed fans screaming for help, climbing camera towers to alert staff and pleading for the show to stop, but the music played on.

Ten lives were lost and victims ranged from 9 to 27 years old, with causes of death officially listed as compressive asphyxiation, meaning they were crushed so badly that they couldn’t breathe.

In the aftermath, various conspiracy theories emerged online, with some suggesting that the concert was a satanic ritual.

These claims were widely debunked by experts and fact-checkers, who attributed the tragedy to crowd dynamics and venue safety issues rather than any nefarious intent.

Despite the controversy, Scott's influence in the music industry remains significant. With over 70 million monthly listeners on Spotify, the rapper behind hits like “Sicko Mode” ranks among the most-streamed artists on the platform.

His impact is also felt strongly in southern Africa. In Zambia, for example, Scott is one of the top ten most-streamed artists, alongside global stars like Drake and Burna Boy.

This highlights his growing fanbase in the region, which continues to expand.

Scott first performed in South Africa back in 2017, sharing the stage with Bryson Tiller.

That show left a lasting impression on fans and with his upcoming "Circus Maximus" World Tour, his return is set to reignite that excitement, promising another unforgettable experience for his South African supporters.
