Durban — Local football team AmaZulu FC and BuildIt joined forces recently to provide festive cheer to the youth by visiting the Sphethamandla Day Care in Clermont, Durban. Sphethamandla Day Care cares for about 32 toddlers.

AmaZulu were represented by midfielders George Maluleka and Sphesihle Maduna, as well as various office staff. They were all on hand to play with the children as well as motivate them. Part of the activities on the day included setting up and refurbishing the kids’ playing area, as well as handing over educational toys and groceries.

AmaZulu Community Trust programmes manager Mpho Dintwa thanked BuildIt for their continued commitment alongside the club in affecting lives. They came on board by assisting the day-care centre with paint and educational toys.

The trust bought groceries and prepared a space for the centre to set up a vegetable garden.

“It was about lending a helping hand to Mam’ Makhaye, the Sphethamandla Day Care principal, for what she has started. BuildIt Pinetown – who despite the tough economic times, decided to come and assist us. I would also like to encourage other partners outside of our very own sponsors and partners to also join us in reaching out. This is what we do as the AmaZulu Community Trust,” Dintwa said.

Dintwa said Makhaye initially took a dumpsite area (where the daycare is currently located) and received donations from the municipal councillor. They soon turned it into the day care, at which she is also responsible for assisting the children with homework, and feeding them afterwards.

“Within the NGO, we always look for places of need, and through our branches we identified the Sphethamandla Day Care,” he said.

“We don’t want to just call ourselves a ‘people’s club’, we walk the walk,” Dintwa said.

BuildIt KZN regional procurement manager Sbusiso Ngobese made a further pledge to assist the day care in building toilets.
