Durban — Wrapping up their GivingTuesday campaign which aims to raise R270 000 to deliver 300 000 meals to families in need across South Africa through their Virtual Food Pantry, SA Harvest's made a final call for donations.
GivingTuesday is a global movement that encourages people and organisations to come together and give back to their communities.
The campaign, launched on December 3, runs until Friday, December 13.
SA Harvest said that GivingTuesday is an innovative way of enabling anyone with even a small amount to donate to make an impact through SA Harvest's model of rescuing food. This ensures that the cost per meal is only 90c - so that every rand makes a difference. R20 feeds a family of four for two days, and R1 000 provides three months of meals, the NPO said.
SA Harvest said its approach goes beyond food delivery - it focuses on restoring dignity, empowering communities, and building resilience.
“Each donation through the Virtual Food Pantry helps fund SA Harvest’s critical work, rescuing food, reducing waste, and advocating for a more equitable food system,” the NPO said.
The NPO further stated that the Virtual Food Pantry is more than a fundraiser – it’s a call to action. Donors can choose from a variety of giving levels, with each donation contributing directly to providing healthy meals and empowering local communities.
CEO and founder of SA Harvest, Alan Browde said their Virtual Food Pantry is a creative way to engage donors and demonstrate how their contributions make a real impact.
"We’re using this GivingTuesday to bring South Africans together, uniting around a common goal: to fight hunger and uplift those in need," said Browde.
Supporters can make a difference in several impactful ways:
Donate: Visit the Virtual Food Pantry to make a contribution, whether as a one-time gift via the BackaBuddy site or by establishing a recurring donation through SA Harvest’s website.
Spread the word: Amplify the campaign by sharing information across your social media channels, via email, or through WhatsApp.
Become a recurring donor: Extend the giving spirit by committing to a monthly donation, ensuring consistent support for those in need.
“Throughout the campaign, SA Harvest will provide updates and share poignant stories from communities benefiting from the program, highlighting how every contribution drives real impact. "Every meal you help provide is a step toward a brighter future for our communities," Browde said.
Together, we can ensure that no one in South Africa goes hungry, he said.
