Durban - Three pedestrians were killed after five of them were run over in three separate incidents in Kloof and Nandi Drive on Tuesday.

START Rescue spokesperson Warren Brauns said that at 10.44am on Tuesday they received reports of a pedestrian that had been struck by a motor vehicle on Bridle Road, Forest Hills, in Kloof, west of Durban.

He said START Rescue dispatched first responders, police services and Netcare 911 rescue to the incident.

“On arrival, it was found that three pedestrians had been hit,” Brauns said.

“Sadly, one patient suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased on arrival. One patient needed a rapid intervention, and a decision was made to bring in a Netcare 911 helicopter for transportation, and the third patient was stabilised on scene and transported to a nearby hospital for the further care they would require.”

The two other incidents took place in the vicinity of Queen Nandi Drive.

In the afternoon, Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the intersection of Queen Nandi Drive and Marseilles Crescent in the Briardene area, north of Durban, after “a male pedestrian believed to be approximately thirty years of age suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead on arrival of paramedics,” said spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

“The driver of the vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.”

Van Reenen said earlier a pedestrian was killed on the N2 near Queen Nandi Drive.

“Pedestrians are advised to use demarcated crossings and only cross where it is safe to do so,” he said.

Emer-G-Med paramedics also responded to the earlier incident for reports of a pedestrian-vehicle accident after 8am on Tuesday.

“Reports from the scene are that a male, approximately thirty years of age, was struck by a light motor vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. He was declared dead on the arrival of paramedics,” Van Reenen said.

“The driver of the vehicle, a female approximately thirty-five years of age, suffered minor injuries and was treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.”
