Durban - Three people were left seriously injured following a shooting during an alleged home invasion in Newlands West just after 8pm on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Veldcastle Drive.

“ALS Paramedics Medical Services, together with VIP Medical Response, arrived on the scene to find that a reaction officer had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was stabilised on the scene before being rushed through to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that he required,” said ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

“Two occupants from the house sustained serious injuries and were stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before being rushed through to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that they required.”

Jamieson said events leading up to the shooting were unknown. However, SAPS were on the scene and would be investigating further.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the complainant alleged that he was outside with his friends when they noticed four armed men jumping over the wall.

“The suspects assaulted the complainant with a firearm on the face, forced him and his friends inside the house. They locked them inside the room while ransacking the house. They took laptops, cash, jewellery and cellphones and drove away in their getaway vehicle.”

“It is alleged that while fleeing the scene the suspects came across a security guard who was driving past the house. They opened fire, wounding him in the abdomen and was taken to the hospital for medical attention,” Gwala said.

She said charges of attempted murder and robbery were opened at Newlands East police station for investigation.
