Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has reported on the deaths of two matric pupils.

Education MEC Mbali Frazer said that it was with deep sadness that they announced the death of two Grade 12 pupils from the Pinetown District.

“On behalf of the KZN Department of Education, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, schools and communities with the tragic loss of our young matric candidates,” Frazer said.

She said that the first pupil was the victim of a stabbing that took place at Mandlenkosi High School. The pupil was rushed to a nearby clinic for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injury. The pupil was allegedly stabbed by a Grade 10 pupil.

She said that the second pupil was from Umqhele Secondary School. It is alleged that the Grade 12 pupil after writing her isiZulu home language paper I in the morning, subsequently went home and committed suicide.

“As a department, we are very concerned and will not condone school violence,” Frazer said.

She said that the community must be aware that the department’s psychology services must be informed when parents, guardians and educators suspect unusual behaviour patterns in learners, to avert such tragedies.

May their souls rest in peace, Frazer said.
