Durban — This week, the eThekwini Municipality is expected to launch a mass communication and education campaign to urge communities and the business sector to work with the municipality to keep the city clean.

This was according to mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, who recently gave an update on the municipality’s clean-up campaign launched in September. The campaign is focusing on the CBD and secondary towns.

“We are pleased to report that this campaign is now yielding positive results. We have partnered with informal traders to curb illegal trading, particularly in the inner city. Our metro police have been doing sterling work in fining businesses that are not disposing of their litter in designated places. Those who are found to have transgressed our by-laws, we name and shame them,” Kaunda said.

“We will be launching a mass communication and education campaign to urge communities and the business sector to work with us to keep our city clean.”

He said the municipality wanted to reiterate that Durban is open for business and the beaches and swimming pools are safe for swimming as they were constantly monitoring water quality.

Last week, Kaunda said: “We want to inform the public that currently, the city has 13 operational swimming pools to enable residents and visitors to cool down as they enjoy the warm summer weather.

“The pools include Rainham, Durban North, Pipeline, Umgababa, Tiger Rocks, uMlazi D, Anstey’s, Tesoriere, Westville, Lahee Park, Mariannridge, Chesterville, Kings Park and South Beach pool.”

Kaunda said that the public will be informed of the reopening of many other pools that are undergoing maintenance.

“We also want to remind our residents and visitors that the following beaches are open for swimming because of the improvement of water quality standards: Point Beach, uShaka, Addington, South Beach, Wedge, North Beach, Bay of Plenty, Battery Beach, Country Club, Brighton Beach, Reunion beach, Pipeline Beach, Toti Main, Warner and Umgababa beaches.”

He added that Westbrook, Bronze, Laguna, Thekwini, uMhlanga, uMdloti, Winkelspruit and Anstey’s beaches remain closed until further notice.
