Durban — The eThekwini Municipality has announced that it has a three-pronged approach to help with the resettlement of flood victims and has provided an update on the progress it has made.
The municipality indicated this during an executive committee meeting on Tuesday, convened and chaired by mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.
A progress report on the interventions for the resettlement of displaced flood victims from mass care centres was tabled.
The municipality said it had “instituted a three-pronged approach to assist the resettlement of the displaced flood victims, which includes the utilisation of council-owned property, rent/ lease (of) privately owned buildings for a period of at least 12 months while exploring alternative options and work with the KZN Department of Human Settlement to identify land for the construction of TRUs (temporary housing units).”
It also provided an update on the progress it has made, which is as follows:
- Over 360 families have been issued with material supplies to rebuild;
- Over 20 houses were built through donations by service providers in the private sector;
- Eight parcels of land handed over by the KZN Department of Human Settlement have been identified and cleared as suitable to build a minimum of 1 076 houses;
- Contractors have been appointed by the KZN Department of Human Settlement for five of the eight sites handed over;
- 23 other sites are currently undergoing feasibility assessments; and
- To date, 43 mass care centres have been cleared, and people moved out - leaving 71 centres.
