Durban — As families plan their Christmas lunches and wonder what to add to the menu this year, there is one traditional Christmas table treat that many people would agree on – gammon.

This is according to retailer Spar, which has listed gammon as the Christmas favourite.

“The great thing about gammon is that it is equally delicious served hot or cold. It is versatile so should there be any leftovers, you’re covered for Boxing Day too.”

The retailer stated that leftover gammon could easily be used in breakfast quiche, salad, pasta or a stir-fry.

It also said pork was cheaper than lamb or beef.

“What is interesting to note for the health-conscious, beef and lamb contain more saturated fat than pork. Most of the fat in pork is healthy mono-saturated fat with small, but higher levels of polyunsaturated fats when compared to other red meats. This means pork, including gammon, offers a more favourable fat content than most other red meats.

“Additionally, gammon is an excellent source of vitamin B and minerals and is also rich in protein, which makes it a healthier choice without having to compromise on deliciousness.”

Spar said that while cooking gammon from scratch and serving it with all the trimmings might appeal to the Christmas traditionalists, this was definitely not for everyone at the height of a South African summer.

The retailer offers Christmas gammons that are ready-cooked and glazed.

Christmas will be this weekend, on Sunday to be exact, on December 25.
