Durban — Four suspects were remanded in custody for being in possession of firearms and drugs in KwaZulu-Natal recently.

KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said provincial police conducted a multidisciplinary operation in Inyoni last Thursday.

Ngcobo said the operation yielded positive results when four suspects were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and drugs. Police proceeded to Inyoni where they arrested four suspects aged 61, 39, 36 and 35 years.

“Police recovered three pistols and ammunition, 24 crystal meth, 380 red and white heroin capsules and 13 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R20 000,” Ngcobo said.

“The suspects appeared before Nyoni Magistrate’s Court on July 26. Three were remanded in custody and they will appear before the court on August 1.”

Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, five suspects are expected to appear in court for the possession of firearms and dealing in drugs.

Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said five suspects between age 18 and 44 are expected to appear in court on Monday, July 29, following their arrest in isolated incidents.

Swartbooi said that on Thursday, Stellenbosch police were executing a search warrant at a residence in Kayamandi and upon entering the informal structure, they found four men inside.

“The members searched the males and the inner perimeter of the structure and recovered a consignment of drugs, cash and a pistol. They detained the four males between the ages of 18 and 44 for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and dealing in drugs,” Swartbooi said.

He said that in an unrelated intervention, Mfuleni police were busy patrolling on Friday, July 26, when they saw three unknown males roaming near Minister Street.

“The suspects fled in different directions when they saw the patrol vehicle, which necessitated the police members to follow them on foot. They apprehended one suspect, searched him, found a 9mm pistol in his possession, and arrested the man for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition,” Swartbooi said.

He said once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Stellenbosch and Blue Downs magistrate’s courts on the mentioned charges.
