Durban — The ANC in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region said it would embark on a massive march to the police station at KwaMaphumulo to seek answers on the status of the investigation of ward 11 councillor Zakhele Khuzwayo’s death, while at the same time raising public awareness about killings and intimidation of its members.
The spokesperson for this region, Thandeka Ngidi-Mkhize, said there had been inadequate feedback on Khuzwayo’s murder.
“The ANC appreciates the formation of a multidisciplinary task team by police to investigate the assassination of Khuzwayo. We, however, note that there has been little progress and inadequate feedback on the case. We believe that the Khuzwayo family and people of Maphumulo, including the ANC, deserve speedy justice. It is also our belief that when the case takes too long to be resolved, important witnesses disappear,” said Ngidi-Mkhize.
According to this region, a number of councillors deployed at KwaMaphumulo Municipality have expressed fear over a number of death threats allegedly made by individuals. They have commended the SAPS management for escalating Khuzwayo’s case to the National Command.
“We also call upon the SAPS to establish an active physical presence of the Crime Intelligence Unit in the region, that will follow up on information about planned and already executed political killings in our region. This will help avoid unnecessary deaths and promote the culture of freedom of political association,” Ngidi-Mkhize said.
Ngidi-Mkhize added that they had instructed their safety and security subcommittee to develop a comprehensive programme working with the government’s security cluster, private security companies, community policing forums, non-governmental organisations as well as general citizens that would root out all forms of crime in the region.
In a recent event, Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Sihle Zikalala called for urgent police action following the murder of the induna of Osuthu Traditional Council and three other individuals.
