Cape Town – A motorcyclist and pedestrian were seriously injured in an accident in Goodwood on Tuesday morning.
Spokesperson Shawn Herbst said Netcare 911 responded to the scene at Frans Conradie Drive in Goodwood at 7.26am.
“Reports indicate that a motorcyclist hit a pedestrian running across the road.
“Medics assessed the scene and found that the pedestrian had sustained serious injuries following a traumatic amputation of his lower left leg,” Herbst said.
The motorcyclist sustained critical injuries and required advanced life support intervention to stabilise him.
Meanwhile, Provincial Traffic Services recorded 271 speeding offences and arrested 34 people for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 21 people lost their lives in crashes from August 10 – 14.
Of the 21 deaths, 11 were drivers, 8 pedestrians and 2 passengers.
The Provincial Traffic Services implemented 119 roadblocks and vehicle checkpoint and speed control operations, with 24 613 vehicles stopped and checked across the province.
A total 6 747 fines were issued for traffic violations. Thirteen vehicles were impounded and 74 were found to be unroadworthy.
“I plead with all motorists to slow down when they see pedestrians on the road. Never drink and drive. Never exceed the speed limit,” Mobility MEC Daylin Mitchell said.
