Cape Town – Timothy John Schlesinger from Rondebosch Boys’ High school placed 2nd in maths countrywide, followed by Liam Edward Gurney of Westerford High School in third.
Intsebenziswano Secondary School’s Kamva Goso placed 2nd countrywide in physical science, and first in the Quintile 2 schools category. Jean Durand of Paul Roos Gymnasium placed 3rd in physics countrywide.
Lise-Mari van Wyk or pioneer Skool placed 3rd in the special schools category and Ancilla Kaylyn Julius of the Dominican School Vir deaf was 3rd in the SA Sign Language category.
Top achiever Goso is one step closer to fulfilling his dream of buying his mother a house and moving her out of Browns Farm, near Philippi. Goso, who will be the first child in his family to go to university, obtained first place in Quintile 2 at a no-fee school. The total number of NSC passes in “no fee” schools stands at 241 340.
“Seeing my mother this happy and proud is really overwhelming,” said Goso, who will be studying actuarial science at UCT.
His mother, Amanda Magida, said: “As a single parent, I am lucky that my child chose books and not gangs and crime, as teenagers easily get influenced by the environment they live in.”
Liam Gurney’s proud mom, Penny, said it felt like she was the one writing the exam. “I was supporting him all the way,” she said.
