It will be all hands on deck to ensure responsible behaviour on the roads this long weekend as tragic accidents have already claimed lives.
A number of fatalities were reported including people who travelled in private cars, buses and pedestrians.
The Langeberg Municipality announced the deaths of three officials who were killed in a crash at the weekend.
“A devastating car crash occurred on the road between Ashton and Robertson, claiming the lives of our esteemed colleagues. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. Their dedication and service to the municipality will always be remembered and cherished.
The loss of these valued members of our team is deeply felt. We also wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to the fourth individual involved in the accident, we hope for their swift and full recovery,” it said.
According to the Mobility Department, between November 25 and December 8, 33 pedestrians were killed on the roads.
About 114 arrests were also made for driving under the influence of alcohol.
MEC Isaac Sileku said with schools closed and a long weekend approaching, increased traffic is expected.
“This festive season, we urge every road user to make safety their top priority. Whether you are driving, walking, or cycling, your actions can save lives.
“Our traffic officers are fully mobilised and will enforce a zero-tolerance approach to offenders. Provincial traffic officers will be conducting extensive patrols and roadblocks throughout the province. Stringent action will be taken against those found speeding, driving under the influence, or engaging in reckless behaviour,” said Sileku.
Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa officiated a passout parade on Thursday for the second cohort of the 21st century law enforcement cadre.
About 123 traffic trainees who completed the NQF Level 6 Traffic Officer qualification graduated.
Police deputy minister Cassel Mathale also officiated a passing out parade at the Bishop Lavis Academy where 402 newly trained police constables completed their training and will soon be serving communities.

“The festive season ushers in a period of joy and celebration, but it also comes with an increased risk of road accidents due to higher traffic volumes and long-distance travel. As the minibus taxi industry plays a critical role in transporting millions of South Africans, this campaign seeks to prioritise safety to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely. We urge all stakeholders in the minibus taxi industry, including drivers, operators, and associations, to participate in this campaign,” Santaco said.
A number of departments including municipalities are hosting a joint festive season safety parade to signal the start of the peak festive season and inter-agency collaboration to advance public safety.
Today will mark the formal qualification of the project 1 000 cadets as Learner Law Enforcement officers, who will swell the ranks of the City’s festive season deployment.
